Turkey's fast-growing influence on global research

December 2008

Clinical medicine, plant and animal science, engineering and physics are just some of the fields where Turkey exhibits a significant contribution to global research.

Turkey reached a milestone of 10,000 published research papers in 2003, and since then it has produced an average of over 14,000 scientific papers per year (just under 1.5 per cent of the world total). Since the mid 1990s the average citation rate of these papers (total citations/total papers) has risen consistently, and it looks to continue a steep movement into the world scientific community.

Leading this increased scientific output are 17 universities that each published over 1000 papers between 2002 and 2006. The universities of Istanbul and Hacettepe have been particularly prolific – each publishing over 4000 papers each in this time period. Clinical medicine, plant and animal science, engineering and physics are fields where Turkey demonstrates a particular national strength by contributing over 1.5% of total papers, although the average impact of these varies.

As their research output and impact grows, Turkish universities and researchers are finding it more important than ever to analyze, measure, and track their research success. Citation analysis can help by highlighting top researchers and the work that influences the overall impact of an organization, group, or nation.
